These are pictures of an offal spill on the A14 which has left some drivers “stuck in their cars for most of this morning”.
The A14 westbound at Kelmarsh has been closed since around 9.15am today after piles of meat spilled out of a poultry van.
According to Highways England, traffic remains backed up all the way to Junction 3 at Rothwell.
Andrew Carpenter, who took the pictures, said he had spoken to a contact who is a road sweeper working at the scene.
He said: “I’ve been told some drivers near the scene have now been stuck in the cars since 10am. You would think they’ll have to do something about that shortly to prevent them being stuck there overnight.”
As of 4.30pm today Highways England have set up a diversion route using the A508 between Kelmarsh and Market Harborough, the A4304 westbound, and the A5199 via Welford back to the A14 at Junction 1.
Congestion is expected on all three roads heading into rush hour, according to traffic officers, particularly the A508 before Junction 2.
A spokesperson for Highways England confirmed that the spillage will cause “permanent damage” to the road surface.
They said: “It’s a large quantity, so when it is clear we might have to see if the road needs to be resurfaced.
“This kind of material will permanently damage the road. It remains to be seen whether we’ll have to do that or not. It might mean the road is closed even after the spillage is clear.”
