Consultation on proposed reforms to Driver Certificate of Professional Competence |

The Department for Transport has today (2 March 2023) launched a consultation about proposed reforms to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) qualification. This consultation follows the review into DCPC which took place between November 2021 and January 2022 in response to acute driver shortages in the road haulage and passenger transport industries. We are seeking views on options for how the DCPC qualification is maintained and, in the case of returning drivers, regained, taking advantage of the greater autonomy to regulate following EU-exit. Potential measures being considered include:
If implemented, reforms will establish a National DCPC for use in Great Britain and possibly Northern Ireland should Northern Ireland ministers agree (as DCPC is a devolved matter). The existing regime, International DCPC, will remain for travel to, from or within the EU, including the Republic of Ireland, and will continue to be recognised for journeys within the UK. We would like to emphasise that the proposals are all subject to consultation and no final decisions have been made on which reforms may be taken forward. The cpc training is a waste of my time and my money I do the job 5 days a week and follow all the rules and drive in a professional way I don’t need to receive moor training I have been a professional driver for 28 years and have never seen such poor driving standards as their are now from both professional and non professional drivers and classroom training by someone who is signed up to do courses because of the amount of profit they can make. some of the biggest problems I have on the road are professional and none professional drivers pulling in to my braking space to get off at the next junction professional drivers who don’t know the length of there vehicles and pulling in to soon and professional and none professional drivers who don’t know how to join the carriageway from an acceleration lane and so if they can’t even get the basics right a classroom is not going to fix it
What a waste of time &money . This was bought in by the E.u . We are not in the E.u anymore ( Remember Brexit) . I & Thousands of other Drivers can’t afford the Time or Money to renew mine just another money making scheme . I’d love to go back Driving but the DVSA have preventing me from Doing so. No doubt Cheap imported Drivers will be given a Helping hand . & be given theirs FREE. .
I am coming to 70 and at the moment still drive trucks fulltime. The issue I have is I don’t intend to drive forever but my DCPC is due for renewal next year and I don’t see why I should shed out a lot of money for a 5 Yr ticket when I might only want to drive for 2yrs
35 years at it and eny more bull and I will just jack it in go in the factory leave it alone I can just about put up with it
It’s format is wrong, too much time and money wasted it doesn’t attract new drivers .
I’d be shocked if anyone who isn’t getting financial gain from the dcpc, is in favour of it, it’s clear that it’s making youngsters turn away from the industry, it forced hundreds out when it was brought in, why should we keep paying out for these courses when the basic needs of drivers are overlooked on a daily basis. I would never recommend this line of work to anyone, once my 5 years is up I’m done driving, from someone who came into this as a job for life, frankly the way it’s handled is appalling
It should be scrapped as I was driving Trucks from the age of 21 all over Europe and Beyond and when the CPC was introduced I left the profession and i am 51 now and if it was abolished I would return to driving again.
