A scrap metal merchant in Derby decided to cover the driver’s seat of his van in polish and smarties after being told that his vehicle was going to be seized.
Officers from Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit stopped the vehicle in Derby yesterday afternoon to run some checks on it.
It was not long before the officers learned that the vehicle’s operator had no waste carriers licence.
It also transpired that it had no valid insurance.
When officers explained to the driver that his vehicle and the scrap it was carrying were going to be seized, the driver told the officers: ‘I hope you get COVID’.
Realising that someone else might have to drive his van away from the scene, the driver then decided to throw polish and smarties over the driver’s seat and the steering wheel.
The vehicle was removed by a recovery truck after the scrap metal had been transferred to a larger vehicle.
