A driver has died after a lorry burst into flames following a crash on the M62.

The smash between two HGVs happened on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway near junction 10 for the Croft Interchange just after 4.35am this morning (Tuesday). One of the lorries burst into flames, police said.

A stretch of the eastbound carriageway remains shut at junction 10 following the incident. Any witnesses are being urged to contact officers.

In a statement, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision between two HGVs on the M62 at the Croft interchange. At 4.37am this morning (Tuesday 31 January) police were called to the collision at junction 10.

Tragically, one of the drivers died at the scene. The second driver escaped uninjured and is assisting police.

“One of the vehicles was on fire, and one of the drivers sadly died at the scene. The second driver is believed to be uninjured and helping police with enquiries.

“The carriageway is closed and it is advised to avoid the area as the closure is impacting on nearby roads. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage should contact Cheshire Police on 101 or via the website quoting IML 1468300.”

Another stretch of the M62 eastbound is also closed this morning after a lorry fire between junction seven for Rainhill and junction eight for Warrington West. No injuries have been reported in this incident, with the driver escaping the vehicle before it set on fire.

This stretch remains shut for resurfacing work and emergency repairs.
