John Kelly drove at more than twice the speed limit in 30mph zones.
A driver has been slapped with a massive fine after being caught speeding 57 times in just two months. John Kelly was fined nearly £47,000 after being found to have driven at more than twice the speed limit in 30mph zones.
Kelly, of Lynmouth Crescent, in Llanrumney, was found to have committed 58 separate offences across just four speed camera locations between February 19 and April 14 this year, with all but one of these – a red light offence – relating to speeding, Cardiff Magistrates heard.
Driving a blue Volkswagen Beetle, he sped through 30mph zones at an average of 45mph. The highest speed he was clocked at through a zone with the same speed restrictions was 69mph, more than double the limit, reports WalesOnline.
After he was caught on camera, an investigation was started by GoSafe, the Welsh Road casualty reduction partnership, with the vehicle’s details circulated nationally. On April 14, the partnership’s Field Enquiry Officers were alerted to the vehicle being stopped in the Staffordshire area, where it was seized for having no insurance.
Officers from Staffordshire Police then provided information to GoSafe, which allowed them to identify Kelly as the keeper of the vehicle, with 58 Notice of Intended Prosecution letters then sent to his home in Llanrumney. However, when they received no response, all 58 offences were referred to court.
The case was heard at Cardiff Magistrates Court on September 30, where, in Kelly’s absence, the 58 offences were proven, and he was ordered to pay a total of £46,880. He was also disqualified from driving for 36 months and received 48 points on his licence.
