Approximately 2,750 new ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras are in the process of installation, with around 1,900 currently operational. While the specific number of cameras equipped with the new protective measures is undisclosed, these upgrades are being introduced in anticipation of the impending expansion of the ULEZ to encompass all of Greater London, scheduled for August 29.

The ULEZ expansion is a response to concerns about pollution caused by older vehicles and could lead to daily charges of £12.50 for drivers, amounting to an annual fee of £4,562.50. However, some dissent has emerged, with a group known as the Blade Runners actively seeking to dismantle or destroy ULEZ cameras across the city. Transport for London (TfL) reported that 200 cameras had been either stolen or vandalized by July, prompting them to reinforce security measures in response to these incidents.

In light of these developments, a spokesperson for TfL emphasized their commitment to tackling vandalism and reported that they have collaborated with the police to address the issue. The Metropolitan Police consider this form of sabotage a criminal offense and are prepared to pursue prosecution against those involved.

Despite Mayor Sadiq Khan’s assertion that the police treat ULEZ camera vandalism seriously, the Metropolitan Police indicated that they had not previously investigated such incidents. However, the police acknowledge the potential for these acts to be categorized as offenses, including criminal damage and theft. Blade Runners Face Up to Four Years in Jail for Vandalism, TfL Adjusts Transparency

If an investigation by the Metropolitan Police results in a Blade Runner being convicted of criminal damage, they could potentially be sentenced to a maximum of four years in prison.

Transport for London (TfL) has chosen to adopt a more guarded approach regarding the disclosure of the extent of camera vandalism, with Mayor Sadiq Khan attributing this decision to the potential risk of inadvertently granting vandals undue attention and recognition.

During a session of Mayor’s Question Time, Mr. Khan acknowledged that only a “small number” of individuals were responsible for the acts of camera vandalism. He revealed that two people have already been charged with offenses related to vandalism and are scheduled for court hearings.

Mr. Khan explained, “Taking into account advice from law enforcement partners and other stakeholders, TfL has made the strategic choice not to publicize information regarding the tally of cameras that have been subjected to criminal damage.”

To mitigate the risk of further vandalism, TfL has adopted the use of “cherry picker” trucks to position cameras beyond the reach of civilians. This measure was implemented following instances of cameras, located atop traffic signals, being either vandalized or removed by frustrated members of the public.
