Police in the Netherlands have confirmed that a man who had climbed onto a lorry that was boarding a UK-bound ferry has died after falling from the vehicle.
The fatal accident occurred on New Year’s Eve at around 6.45pm at the Hook of Holland port.
According to the police, a man had climbed onto a UK-bound truck but fell as the vehicle boarded the ferry, dying on the spot from his injuries. His identity and origin had not been identified when the police published its report. Another man who had climbed onto a separate vehicle was found and later arrested.
In the report, the Dutch police referred to the two men as “climbers”.
As the police put it, the term “climbers” refers to “stowaways who want to travel abroad illegally in or under a trailer”.
Police added that such persons often get help from third parties such as human traffickers. The report from the police also states that in Rotterdam, regular attempts are made to board vessels bound for the United Kingdom.
Law enforcement in the Netherlands is thus working closely with the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee “to protect these people from this life-threatening proposition”.
