The specialist transporter attempted to negotiate the tight turn onto Pyewipe Road.
The huge 37-metre transporter that delivered the new River Freshney footbridge became stuck on a tight corner leaving Grimsby this afternoon.
The enormous vehicle arrived in the town earlier under a police escort having travelled from Scunthorpe carrying the 30m-long and 5m-wide bridge along the A180.
However, the transporter used by a specialist haulage contractor became stuck after attempting to negotiate the tight right-hand turn at the junction between Corporation Road and Pyewipe Road.
It is understood the vehicle was stuck for more than 30 minutes as it was forced to reverse back down Corporation Road and onto Armstrong Street, which was the way it came in this morning.
A man at the scene said: “It was stuck for almost an hour. Why they didn’t bring it back the way it went along Armstrong, I don’t know.”
After watching the scene unfold, Corporation Road resident Kerrie Raynor said: “We suggested they take the railing out to get it round. But instead it stood there for about half an hour until they decided to get it reversed back down the road and up through Armstrong Street.”
She added: “They had to turn all the cars behind it around so it could reverse.”
The transporter caused long tailbacks along Boulevard Avenue and Pyewipe and Corporation Road.
Householders had to temporarily move vehicles from part of the route earlier today to allow the huge vehicle to bring the new footbridge into Grimsby.
It started its journey from Scunthorpe this morning, where the bridge had been painted, following its fabrication at SH Structures, in North Yorkshire.
The bridge is set to be lifted into place by large cranes soon but will remain inaccessible for several weeks as completion work is needed before it can open.
