MPs have issued a stark warning about the rising threat of freight crime, urging the government to take swift action. A report from the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Freight and Logistics, titled Securing Our Supply Chains, sheds light on the serious impact of freight crime across the UK and recommends key solutions.
The report, developed with the RHA and National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS), reveals:
5,370 reported incidents of HGV and cargo theft in 2023, a 5% increase from the previous year.
Direct losses of £68.3m in stolen goods, with estimates suggesting the true cost exceeds £700m.
Over £1bn in losses since 2020 when factoring wholesale and retail values.
Police forces, already under-resourced, are struggling to tackle the issue, leading to widespread underreporting.
Key APPG Recommendations:
1. Secure Parking Standards: Ensure all lorry parks meet strict safety standards to protect drivers and cargo.
2. Planning Reforms: Address hauliers’ needs in the National Planning Policy Framework.
3. National Parking Programme: Tackle the chronic shortage of safe lorry parking facilities.
4. Support for Law Enforcement: Increase funding and resources to help police combat organised freight crime.
Richard Smith, RHA Managing Director, called freight crime “low risk, high reward” for criminals, highlighting the devastating effects on businesses, driver wellbeing, and recruitment. MP Rachel Taylor, Chair of the APPG, emphasised the urgency of protecting this critical sector.
The report launch brought together industry leaders, MPs, law enforcement, and organisations from across the logistics sector, all united in the call for decisive government action.
