The M20 will shut tonight as Operation Brock’s contraflow system is deployed in preparation for the busy bank holiday weekend.
To facilitate this, the route will close between Maidstone and Ashford, covering a 13-mile section from Junction 8 (Leeds Castle) to Junction 9 (Ashford). This is due to the expected heavy traffic volume over the weekend.
The M20 will be closed overnight from 8pm tonight until 6am tomorrow:
– London-bound: Junction 9 to 8
– Coastbound: Junction 7 to 9
National Highways has ensured that fully signed diversion routes will be in place during the closure to minimize disruption.
When the motorway reopens, the Brock contraflow will be active, and all signage must be followed. All HGVs heading to the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel are required to join Operation Brock at M20 Junction 8.
HGV drivers ignoring the signs and attempting alternative routes to Eurotunnel or the Port of Dover risk a £300 fine and will be sent to the back of the queue by police or enforcement agents. This includes those attempting to bypass via the M2/A2 at Brenley Corner.
Other coastbound traffic, including local freight and cars heading for the continent, should follow the signs to enter the contraflow on the M20 London-bound carriageway.
A National Highways spokesperson advised: “Anyone planning to use Eurotunnel and the Port of Dover should plan their journeys, check with their travel operator before setting out, and allow extra time. Be prepared for delays, and ensure you have sufficient fuel, warm clothes, and supplies like food and drink.”
