Sutton Coldfield-based family firm, The Haulage Group Ltd, has entered administration.

Edward M Avery-Gee, Daniel Richardson, and Nick Brierley of Manchester-based CG Recovery have been appointed as joint administrators for the company.

Headquartered at Maybrook Business Park in Minworth, Sutton Coldfield, The Haulage Group employs around 15 staff and holds operating licenses for 70 trucks and 70 trailers. Founded in 1960 and known as the Howell Group until December 2021, the company specializes in general and contract haulage, automotive haulage, pallet distribution, and storage services.

This move to administration comes a year after The Haulage Group and Turners (Soham) were fined a total of £2.2 million following a tragic incident in which depot manager Neil Roberts, 60, was struck and killed by a reversing HGV on August 30, 2019, at The Haulage Group’s transport yard.

Turners (Soham) admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, receiving a £1.9 million fine and £7,300 in costs. The Haulage Group also pleaded guilty, resulting in a £300,000 fine and £7,300 in costs.

HSE principal inspector Amy Kalay stated that the incident was “completely preventable,” criticizing both companies for failing to recognize and control the risks associated with workplace transport, particularly the dangers of reversing vehicles and poor visibility.
