A tragic incident unfolded when Jozsef Kovacs, a lorry driver, suffered a fatal accident that resulted in a fractured skull. This unfortunate event occurred on March 16, 2020, at a loading bay within Deeside industrial park, ultimately leading to Mr. Kovacs’ passing in the hospital due to his injuries.
In response to this incident, Williams Haulage, headquartered in Cynwyd, Corwen, faced legal consequences. They were fined £100,000 and were further directed to cover £8,400 in associated costs. The company acknowledged its failure in adequately managing the risks associated with the operation of the loading bay.
The Health and Safety Executive emphasized that Mr. Kovacs, a 63-year-old father originally from Hungary, had been collecting trailers bound for Germany before his unfortunate demise, which resulted from pneumonia during his hospitalization in Stoke-on-Trent. Solicitor Nathan Cook, representing the prosecution, stated that the company had failed in its duties to manage the site effectively.
Agnes Kovacs, Mr. Kovacs’ daughter, conveyed the profound impact of her father’s passing, expressing, “Our father’s death has caused great devastation for the whole family. It’s taken a big financial toll.”
District Judge Gwyn Jones attributed the accident to Mr. Kovacs losing his balance and falling. Defense lawyer Joseph Hart pointed out that the company had since implemented “more robust” safety measures to rectify the identified issues. It was also noted that the firm had a commendable history of health and safety practices and had made substantial contributions to the local community through employment and investment.
