Triumph Amidst Adversity: AE Chilled Reborn as Big Transport
In a year marked by challenges for the industry, including closures and administrations, a beacon of hope has emerged with the remarkable turnaround of AE Chilled. The company, now rebranded as Big Transport, is thriving thanks to an unexpected partnership born from a light-hearted comment.
The story began when AE Chilled’s founder, Alan Emslie, faced what seemed like insurmountable challenges. “We had a major customer go into administration, leaving us with hundreds of thousands in unpaid invoices,” Emslie explained. “I’d already invested £350,000 of my own money to keep the business afloat, sacrificing so much in the process.”
Enter Peter Waddell, an entrepreneur with a £500m fortune built through sheer determination and innovation. Waddell, who owns AE Chilled’s site in Dover, stopped by to discuss overdue rent. In a moment of levity amidst the tension, Emslie joked, “Don’t suppose you want to buy a business, do you?” Remarkably, Waddell did.
Waddell’s journey to success is inspirational. Overcoming significant personal challenges, including deafness and dyslexia, he rose from a tough upbringing in a care home and living rough on the streets to become the mastermind behind Big Motoring World, a thriving car supermarket chain specialising in prestige brands.
Spotting untapped potential in AE Chilled, Waddell invested in its revival, transforming it into Big Transport. The reimagined company is poised for growth, bolstered by a state-of-the-art management app designed to enhance operations and improve customer experience.
“Our technology allows real-time monitoring of operations and shipment tracking, providing transparency and security, especially for high-value pharmaceutical deliveries,” Waddell explained. “We’re focused on delivering not just a service but peace of mind for our customers.”
Since its official relaunch in August, the company has seen a dramatic resurgence. Turnover has climbed back to £1 million per month, with a fleet of 50 trucks restored to pre-crisis levels. Under Waddell’s guidance as chairman, Big Transport is on track for even greater achievements.
Plans for 2025 include expanding the fleet to 75 HGVs, doubling staff numbers to 150, and diversifying into car transportation. The company is also exploring new facilities in the Maidstone area to support its ambitious growth.
“The future is incredibly bright,” said Emslie. “We’ve navigated a challenging period and come out stronger, with a clear path forward.”
Waddell added, “Our success lies in our ability to scale quickly and maintain a robust infrastructure. We’ve built a fantastic team, offer drivers attractive terms, and operate the latest vehicles. Now it’s all about seizing new opportunities and delivering excellence.”
Big Transport’s story is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of collaboration. In a year of turbulence for the industry, its remarkable resurgence shines as a positive example of what’s possible.
