Update: Removal of wmost coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions
This page is up to date following the removal of most restrictions in England. There are different regulations and guidance to follow for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The latest advice on keeping workplaces safe will help you assess the risks and continue to reduce COVID-19 transmission. This includes links to information on vaccination, as well as on testing, tracking and tracing (including where variants are spreading).
Your risk assessment should reflect the public health regulations and guidelines for the nation you are in.
Driver access to welfare facilities
The law says businesses must allow delivery drivers (and other visiting workers) to have safe and easy access to toilets and handwashing facilities on their site.
Refusing delivery drivers access to handwashing and other welfare facilities is against the law and could increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
HSE has issued a joint open letter with the Department for Transport (PDF) about this. The letter aims to reassure drivers and remind businesses of their legal duties.
Drivers’ waiting or rest rooms
Where possible, you should provide a dedicated waiting area for drivers. You must make sure there is adequate ventilation in the waiting area and that it is regularly cleaned.
You must also make sure drivers understand your rules for working safely.
If there is no suitable waiting room/area, drivers should wait in their cabs, while their vehicles are being loaded/unloaded. You must consider the risk of driveaway incidents (where the driver accidentally sets off before loading/unloading is finished) and take steps to control it.
Whatever your rules are for drivers on site, you must still ensure that they have safe and easy access to welfare facilities.
