Emergency response teams engaged in addressing the Distington fire have officially verified that the fire has been successfully extinguished.
Residents have sadly reported the loss of seven tractor units and approximately eleven trailers that belonged to the local transport company, Tyson H Burridge Ltd.
The fire which was reported on 17th September 2023 prompted a significant emergency response has been successfully extinguished, allowing residents who evacuated their homes to return safely.
Law enforcement has cautioned residents about the possibility of lingering odors resulting from the fire. Therefore, those residing in close proximity are urged to keep their windows and doors shut until the odor dissipates.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and all road closures have been lifted. The fire’s origin is believed to be linked to lithium batteries.
Ian Seel, the area manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, has stated, “We will maintain ongoing surveillance of the site but we can confirm that the fire has been successfully extinguished.”
“We extend our gratitude to the members of the public affected by this incident for their patience and understanding,” expressed the authorities.
The fire, which occurred at Main Street, Distington, was a substantial vehicle fire within an industrial yard. It was first reported at 11:31 PM on September 15, leading to the immediate implementation of road closures and precautionary measures.
The response from the local community was remarkable, with neighbors using social media to offer spare beds to those who had been evacuated, sharing well wishes, and ensuring the safe evacuation of elderly residents. Family members have also expressed their appreciation to the residents for their assistance in safeguarding their elderly relatives.
Distington ARL and CASC expressed their gratitude on Facebook, saying, “We extend a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services for their swift response and their dedicated efforts in addressing the fire last night. These remarkable individuals, representing various services, are truly invaluable, selflessly prioritizing the safety of the local residents above all else, even at the risk of their own well-being during the evacuations.”
The community also demonstrated remarkable responsiveness by extending acts of kindness, opening their homes to those in need. Many households in our village welcomed displaced individuals with open arms, offering shelter and comfort to everyone, especially the most vulnerable, during a period of uncertainty.
The Community Centre and its dedicated volunteers exemplified true community spirit and compassion. They opened their doors late into the evening, providing shelter, hot beverages, and snacks until the early morning hours, remaining steadfast until the all-clear signal was given.
Every resident, community volunteer, agency, and emergency service that rallied together in the face of unforeseen, unsettling, and frankly, quite scary circumstances should feel an immense sense of pride.
