Volvo Trucks is set to launch a revamped engine for its renowned FH16 model, boasting a robust 17-litre design capable of producing up to 780 horsepower and 3,800 Newton-meters of torque. This Euro 6 engine, certified for biofuels, is engineered to tackle challenging transport tasks effortlessly, delivering exceptional fuel efficiency and durability.
The FH16 truck, powered by Volvo’s 17-litre engine, addresses the demands of high-speed driving with heavy loads. Offering three power levels – 600 hp, 700 hp, and the industry-leading 780 hp – and increased torque levels ranging from 3,000 Nm to 3,800 Nm, this upgrade ensures swift engine response, enhanced driveability, heightened productivity, and improved fuel efficiency.
Product Manager Marcos Weingaertner emphasizes the engineering excellence behind the new engine: “The 780 hp version is the strongest engine in the industry. We’ve prioritized power, reliability, and responsiveness, ensuring our customers can accomplish tasks faster with improved fuel efficiency, especially on steep gradients.”
Equipped with a single efficient turbocharger, the D17 engine enhances responsiveness and driving experience. Volvo’s patented wave piston design optimizes combustion, reducing emissions, while a new injection system ensures optimal fuel economy. Increased peak cylinder pressure enables high power output, and the engine brake power is significantly improved across the entire speed range, resulting in faster gearshifts and reduced wear on brake components.
Certified to run on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) at all power ratings and 100% biodiesel (B100) for the 700 hp version, the D17 engine offers versatility. The gearbox has been upgraded to handle up to 3,800 Nm, with internal efficiency improvements on the 3,000 Nm and 3,400 Nm versions.

Sales for the FH16 with the upgraded engine commence in mid-2024, with production slated for the second half of 2024 for European markets and Australia. The new engine is available in the all-new Volvo FH16 Aero and the latest version of the Volvo FH16.
