Hiab has launched what it claims is the world’s first electric 3-wheel-drive truck-mounted forklift.
Known as the Moffett E4 NX, it is powered by lithium-ion batteries and includes a “human machine interface” that displays battery capacity, machine performance and service information.
It can be charged from conventional domestic power points, or via the truck, or from a 30-amp socket which tops it up faster.
The manufacturer said the forklift’s lack of engine noise means drivers do not have to wear earplugs, and it can be operated overnight in areas with sound restrictions.
It also claimed that total cost of ownership is lower than that of an equivalent diesel forklift, due to the lesser fuel and servicing costs, as the electric powertrain has fewer moving parts than a comparable internal combustion model.
“The Moffett eSeries is the natural choice for customers who need to enter low emissions zones, work at night or meet sustainability targets,” said Jann Hansen, Hiab’s director for sales and product business management. “However, as it’s cheaper to run, safer and more comfortable, we think it will prove popular with customers in a wide range of industries. We are certain that drivers will appreciate working in an exhaust free environment and being able to hear what is happening around them.”
