Amidst a series of trucking company bankruptcies in the UK, Youngs Transportation and Logistics Limited, which acquired Northwest Cargo in 2020, has initiated administration proceedings. On January 31, Leonard Curtis, a UK law firm, was appointed as the administrator.
Operating across five sites in the south-east, south coast, and north-west of the UK, the combined workforce of the two companies totaled 250 employees. The turnover exceeded £40m, supported by a fleet of over 100 vehicles. Youngs marked over 50 years in operation.
Leonard Curtis successfully secured the sale of one north-west site, safeguarding a limited number of jobs. However, two other sites are set for closure, resulting in “significant redundancies.” Youngs, facing financial challenges, revealed debts of £8.3m due within a year and an additional £700,000 beyond, with only £166,000 in available cash in its 2021 full-year accounts.
In September 2023, Youngs registered a charge with Bibby Financial Services, utilizing its owned land and buildings as security for a loan. Administrator Alex Cadwallader acknowledged the troubling state of the haulage sector, anticipating a challenging trading environment in Q1 and Q2 of 2024.
Dan Myers, Managing Director UK and Ireland at XPO, a transportation and logistics company, highlighted the tough times ahead for the industry, citing the first quarter’s lower volumes and potential insolvency risks due to cash flow imbalances. A potential recession, coupled with consumer reluctancy to spend, has led to decreased demand, contributing to the fate of 463 UK haulage companies facing similar challenges in the past year.
