The truck was nearly 24 per cent more than its legal limit.

The managing director of an undisclosed business and a driver have been fined thousands for overloading a vehicle. Images released by police show the articulated trailer straining under the weight of its too heavy-load, which could have caused accidents on the county’s roads.

The dodgy lorry was stopped by Avon and Somerset Police in June 2021, when officers noticed its “weighty” lean and decided to investigate. They found that the carriage was nearly 24 per cent more than its legal limit.

Lorries which are loaded beyond their design weight are less able to stop quickly in an emergency and are likely to have issues with steering.

Now, the driver of that vehicle and the managing director of the company have been handed fines and points on their licences for transporting the farm product in such an unsafe manner. The driver received three points and a £2,507 fine, while the managing director also received three points but was handed a £14,308 fine.

The initial road stop team that discovered this illegal practice described the vehicle at the time as “prohibited” and its use on public roads as “scary”. The stop took place on the busy M5 motorway, where the driver was illegally transporting his 100 metric tonnes of hay, in an extended articulated trailer.

Avon and Somerset Police said on social media: “Court result: Driver received 3 points and total fine/costs of £2507 for using vehicle in dangerous condition/3 weight offences.

“The company director declined to be interviewed regarding the matter and received 3 points and a total fine of £14308.”

That would be a wagon and drag not an articulate wagon and it would be 100 metric meters of hay not tons
