The UK government has approved Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský’s proposed takeover of Royal Mail, following successful negotiations over key commitments to protect the postal service’s future.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced that Křetínský’s EP Group has provided legally binding assurances regarding the company’s operations. These include maintaining Royal Mail’s headquarters within the UK and preserving its current tax residency, with only limited exceptions permitted.
The agreement also includes promises to honor future union agreements, emphasizing the importance of workforce protection. This aspect was particularly significant given Royal Mail’s position as a major UK employer and its historic labor relations.
“We’ve been focused on securing a stable future for Royal Mail after years of stalled progress,” Reynolds said, praising EP Group’s approach to the negotiations and their commitment to preserving the institution’s legacy.
Křetínský, sometimes referred to as the “Czech Sphinx” in business circles, expressed satisfaction with the deal, highlighting his group’s respect for Royal Mail’s institutional significance and its service to UK communities.
The announcement received tentative support from Unite, one of Britain’s largest unions. General Secretary Sharon Graham indicated optimism about the potential for positive change, stating the agreement could pave the way for improvements at the postal service.
The development marks a significant shift for Royal Mail, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years as it adapts to changing market conditions and increased competition in the delivery sector.
