Holyhead Port has announced that all ferry services will remain suspended until at least 15 January 2025 following significant storm damage. The disruption, caused by Storm Darragh, has severely impacted the key route between Wales and Ireland, affecting goods, postal services, and travel plans.
The damage occurred earlier this month when incidents on 6 and 7 December caused part of the Terminal 3 berth to collapse. Stena Line, the port authority, confirmed that both Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 will remain closed while underwater inspections and structural assessments continue.
A port spokesperson expressed regret over the prolonged closure, stating:
“The safety of our colleagues and customers is our first priority. We are working to establish when Terminal 5 can safely reopen, but ferry services will remain suspended until mid-January at the earliest. We apologise for the significant disruption this has caused.”
The closures have prompted concerns from local representatives. Ynys Môn MS Rhun ap Iorwerth has urged the Welsh Government to expedite repairs and support affected businesses. In a letter to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, he emphasised the need for immediate action and assistance for those impacted.
Passengers and freight operators are advised to plan alternative arrangements during this period. Further updates are expected in the coming weeks.
