The government has unveiled plans for a £16.5 million investment to enhance truck stops nationwide, aiming to enhance the quality of life for lorry drivers.
The Roads Minister has announced that 38 truck stops in England will benefit from this investment, with £6 million allocated by the Department for Transport, and the remainder funded by the industry. The objective is to significantly enhance facilities for lorry drivers.
Improvements will include the installation of new showers and restaurants, along with improved lighting and secure fencing around rest areas to ensure drivers feel safer and can rest with greater peace of mind. Additionally, approximately 430 new parking spaces for heavy goods vehicles will be created to alleviate pressure on local roads.
Roads Minister Guy Opperman emphasized the crucial role of lorry drivers in sustaining the economy and highlighted the importance of providing them with the necessary support. He stated that the joint funding aims to offer drivers safe, spacious, and modern facilities that they deserve.
Declan Pang, director of policy and public affairs at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), expressed satisfaction with the government’s initiative. He praised the match-funded grant scheme for its tangible impact on lorry drivers’ experiences and welcomed the additional parking capacity to address the shortage of spaces. Pang also commended facilities operators for their contributions towards improving security and conditions at truck stops, anticipating a positive outcome from the funding across various projects.
