The lorry spilt its load onto the motorway and emergency services are working to clear and repair the road.

Part of the M25 in Essex is shut this morning (Sunday, March 9) after a lorry crash overnight required an emergency resurfacing operation.

Just before midnight, a lorry carrying tarmac on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 crashed into the central reservation between junction 29 for Romford and junction 30 for Basildon, Essex.

The lorry spilled its load across the clockwise carriageway and sprayed diesel across the anti-clockwise carriageway.

That’s forced the clockwise carriageway to shut whilst Highways England teams attempt to resurface much of the road.

A Highways England spokesperson said that emergency services, specialist recovery agents/contractors and traffic officers have worked “throughout the night” and the involved lorry has been recovered, with the diesel spillage on the anti-clockwise carriageway now cleared.

They added: “The clockwise carriageway will remain closed throughout the day.

“We are now in the process of clearing the road surface of spilt tarmac, planing the affected area followed by a full re-surfacing operation of approximately 1,000 square metres of carriageway.”

Two lanes heading anti-clockwise also remain closed as extensive barrier repairs are required.

Drivers have been warned to allow for extra journey time, with a diversion in place and traffic expected to be “poor” throughout the day.
