A 55-year-old lorry driver, John Wickson, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail after attempting to evade justice for a crash that nearly killed two police officers.
Wickson didn’t stop his HGV after colliding with a patrol vehicle on the A1, forcing the officers to take evasive measures.He drove for over eight miles before being apprehended.
Although he faced charges and appeared in court, he skipped his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, leading to a warrant for his arrest.
He was eventually arrested by South Yorkshire Police in Sheffield and sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 29th September 2023.
The incident occurred in 2017 when officers were dealing with an oil spill on the A1.
Wickson’s reckless driving endangered the lives of the officers, who narrowly escaped being hit by his HGV. Sergeant Rob Harrison, one of the officers involved, emphasized Wickson’s dangerous driving and expressed relief that justice was served.
