A 49-year-old lorry driver, Vasile Balcovei, hailing from Tulcea, Romania, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for his involvement in smuggling migrants for a London-based people smuggling gang.

Balcovei dropped off two individuals he had smuggled into the UK at Thurrock Services in Essex in February 2021.

The orchestrated criminal activities were led by Md Mokter Hossain, 54, from Woodford Green, who received a 10-and-a-half-year sentence in June under Operation Symbolry, an NCA investigation.

The incident at Thurrock Services was witnessed by a member of the public, leading to the tracking of the two illegal passengers picked up by a monitored mini-cab.

Although Balcovei’s lorry was traced back to the scene, he had already left the country and returned home. Eventually arrested in Romania, Balcovei was extradited to the UK and pleaded guilty to facilitating illegal immigration, resulting in a 32-month jail term during the hearing at Canterbury Crown Court on November 24.

NCA senior investigating officer Chris Hill emphasized that Balcovei, aware of the illegality of his actions, stood to gain financially from the criminal operation.

Complicit lorry drivers like him played a crucial role in Hossain’s people smuggling network, involved in transporting hundreds of individuals into the UK.

Operation Symbolry has already led to convictions of lorry drivers associated with the organized crime group for people smuggling offenses.

Five mini-cab drivers connected to the network are set to stand trial in January 2024.

The NCA prioritizes tackling organized immigration crime, collaborating with domestic and international partners to disrupt and dismantle such networks.

Individuals with information about illegal activities, especially lorry drivers susceptible to approaches by organized criminals, are encouraged to contact the police at 101 or provide anonymous tips to the charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555111.
