Trucker killed in fall during high winds

The man, in his sixties, fell from around 12 feet. He is thought to have been attempting to unload heavy goods from the lorry during the storm. The incident took place in Marston Green, near Solihull at 9pm last night.

Emergency services were called out and attempted to revive the man but he was pronounced dead.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “A man in his 60s was attended to by paramedics at the scene, but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.”

The force described it as an “industrial accident”.

It is the first confirmed death to have occurred as a result of Storm Dudley.

It said that power cuts, fallen trees and damage to buildings may occur as a result of the strong winds.

The country is set to be hit with further severe weather throughout the course of this week, as a second storm – Storm Eunice – is forecast to hit on Friday.

The Government held a Cobra meeting this morning to discuss the response to the two storms.

Storm Dudley has battered the UK with winds of more than 80mph, causing more than 14,000 people to suffer from power outages.

All trains in Scotland were cancelled and many lines will remain suspended on Thursday morning while safety checks are carried out, ScotRail said.

Yesterday evening, Northern Powergrid said it had reconnected 10,000 homes within hours, but it could not say when 4,000 more would have their power restored.

The Met Office issued amber warnings for wind across multiple regions in the UK, saying that the storm poses a potential risk to life and property in northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland until 6am on Thursday.
