Suffolk Police’s Commercial Vehicle Unit recently intervened when they noticed an HGV parked on an A14 slip road near Bury St Edmunds. This action caused a disruption to traffic joining the carriageway and seemed to be due to a breakdown.
Upon investigation, officers found that the driver had surpassed their legal driving time and opted to take a break on the slip-road.
“This behavior is not only against the law but also poses significant risks,” remarked a spokesperson for Suffolk Police.
According to regulations, drivers are required to take a 45-minute break every four-and-a-half hours while operating a vehicle.
Police stressed the importance of pre-planning breaks before embarking on a journey.
“HGV drivers should strategize their rest stops and choose safe locations such as laybys or designated lorry parks, rather than obstructing live carriageways,” the spokesperson emphasized.
The driver in question was issued a traffic offence report as a result of the incident.
